Foreword by Ian Thompson, Editor
Welcome to another educational episode of The Risinger Build! In this episode, we’re diving deep into the house plumbing specification and installation. We look at why Matt chose certain house plumbing products and learn the benefits and compromises of each.
We’ll be working with the PERT pipe from Legend’s HyperPure line, a flexible and modern alternative to your traditional PEX. Master Plumber Eric Aune from Mechanical Hub joins Matt and he’ll help break down the latest advancements in house plumbing fittings and systems in the USA.
In this episode, Matt will be covering everything from prepping your house plumbing before the pros step in, to smart framing practices that will future-proof your home. We’re also introducing ClearLOC, a revolutionary PTC (Push-to-Connect) fitting system. Crafted from advanced engineered PPSU (polyphenylsulfone) resin, ClearLOC’s unique transparent body allows you to see the connections as they are made, and they install up to 50% faster than other push-fits!
Matt’s also showcasing LG’s sleek dual inverter heat pump water heater. This stylish unit is a significant upgrade from traditional models. From quick hot water recovery to its Wi-Fi capabilities and user-friendly app integration, we’ll cover everything you need to know about its installation and features.
We’re also unveiling the Thermo Drain, a groundbreaking drain water heat recovery system designed to maximize your water heater’s efficiency. You’ll learn how this simple yet effective technology can save you money and energy over time, making it a smart investment for long-term efficiency.
In this episode, we also highlight the benefits of stainless steel hose bibs over traditional brass, including improved insulation and durability. We’ll discuss creating easy access panels for future maintenance, the importance of completing all trades before siding installation, and the use of bend supports in plumbing.
You’ll also get a sneak peek at beautiful cast iron tubs and learn about the efficient use of house plumbing systems.

The Risinger Build Episode 10 – MEP House Plumbing (Summary)
Episode 10 of the Risinger Build opens with Matt Risinger introducing the topic of house plumbing, specifically discussing the use of a new type of flexible pipe that resembles PEX (Polyethylene Cross Linked) but is actually PERT (Polyethylene Raised Temperature). This pipe, known as HyperPure, is produced by Legend, the sponsor of the episode. Unlike PEX, PERT pipes gain their rigidity from the resin itself rather than from a post-production treatment. This makes them 100% recyclable, a feature that isn’t possible with PEX due to the cross-linking chemical present in it. The benefits of Hyper Pure pipes are manifold.
Apart from being environmentally friendly, they are incredibly strong and flexible. Furthermore, they have less ‘memory’ than PEX pipes, which means they retain their shape better after bending. This makes them easier to work with, especially in construction scenarios where the pipes need to be coiled and uncoiled multiple times.
Next, Matt and Eric discuss Legend’s new fitting system, Clearlock. These fittings are made of PPSU (Polyphenylsulfone), the same material used in regular PEX fittings. However, the resin composition in Clearlock fittings is opaque, allowing plumbers to see the tubing within the fitting. This eliminates the need to mark the insertion depth, accelerating the process and ensuring a more effective connection.
Clearlock fittings are also reusable and removable, making them an efficient choice for plumbers who may need to adjust the plumbing layout. Despite their novel design and benefits, these fittings are rated for standard operating temperatures and pressures, making them a suitable choice for a wide variety of house plumbing applications.
The episode also emphasizes the importance of pre-planning in construction projects. Matt stresses the need to choose all fixtures in the house before the plumber arrives. This includes deciding on the placement of valves that go into the wall, such as those for tubs and showers. Matt also discusses a unique construction technique used in the master shower. The walls were lined with AdvanTech X-Factor, a type of plywood, which was recessed into the stud base. This was done to create more space for the house plumbing. The decision to use a 2×6 wall instead of a standard 2×4 interior wall was to ensure that there was enough space for plumbing, particularly for installations like shower valves and sinks.
The episode also covers the installation of a heat pump water heater from LG. This water heater is Wi-Fi enabled and can be controlled remotely via LG’s ThinQ app. It’s designed to be versatile, capable of being installed in a variety of spaces, from open living areas to closets. It operates on several modes, including a turbo mode for rapid water heating.
Finally, Matt highlights the importance of using head flashings on exterior penetrations, such as windows and doors, to ensure a good water seal. These are made by the roofing team and can greatly help reduce the risk of water damage in the future.
