Editor's Review

I visited the Solidan stand at the BAU Expo in Munich in April 2023. What interested me about the manufacturer was their carbon reinforcing mesh and rebar products, a product set I had heard of but never seen until this point. I was informed that the cost of using carbon fiber reinforcement was more expensive than its steel equivalent. However, the benefits could be negated by the reduced thickness of foundation and wall slabs required, which I’m told could be up to a 60% reduction when using the carbon reinforcemnt solution. This is a considerable saving in concrete as well as reduced CO2 emissions and lack of rusting potential and subsequent slab failure.

The carbon anticrack mesh was also very interesting and combines many advantages compared to conventional construction with reinforced concrete. The biggest advantage of the crack limiting reinforcement for concrete is the non-corrosive material with superior bonding behavior which results in many advantages, including:

  • No corrosion so it’s very durable
  • Sanded surface for superior bonding behavior
  • Up to 7x higher tensile strength compared to structural steel
  • Much lighter than steel
  • Thinner and lighter constructions are possible
  • Sustainable material as consumption of water, sand, and cement are significantly lower
  • Thinner components, which allow a slim construction with an aesthetic design
  • Thinner and safer components and thus less raw material usage and economical transport
  • No corrosion, less crack widths, and therefore much lower repair and refurbishment costs

This is a product set that I will be keenly following in the future for my own projects.
